Maine:
The secretary of state approved language for a 2012 ballot initiative to legalize same-sex marriage. In 2009, after the Maine Legislature approved a similar measure allowing same-sex marriage the people overturned it with a 53% vote. Gay activists must gather at least 57,277 valid signatures by January 2012 to get the question on the November ballot.
Rhode Island:
The Rhode Island state Senate passed, and sent to the Governor for his signature, HB 6103 which authorizes same-sex civil unions. The Rhode Island House passed the bill in May. Under the bill, parties to a civil union have the same rights and responsibilities as married couples.
Delaware:
Governor Jack Markell signed the same-sex civil union bill into law making Delaware the eighth state to allow civil unions or domestic partnerships for same-sex couples.
New York:
Ney York senate passes gay marriage bill 33-29 becoming the 6th state to legalize homosexual marriage.
Minnesota:
A Minnesota Senate committee has passed a bill that would let voters next year decide whether to ban gay marriage in Minnesota's constitution. The Minnesota Catholic Conference continues to rally support around the marriage amendment.
